Eygalières, a hilltop village in the Alpilles

The Provence we know. The only villas we’d choose.

Hilltop village of Eygalières with stone houses and clock tower

There are villages you discover, and villages that choose you. Eygalières belongs to the second kind. Perched on its rocky spur at the heart of the Alpilles, it offers one of the most striking panoramas in Provence — a landscape of olive trees, cypress and white stone that painters have never stopped trying to capture.

What to see in Eygalières?

The Saint-Sixte chapel

Before you even reach the village, it stands alone on its rocky mound among the olive trees: the Saint-Sixte chapel is the very image of Eygalières. This 12th-century Romanesque chapel, first mentioned in 1155, was given its porch in 1629, when it served as a quarantine station during the plague. Every year, on Easter Tuesday, the “roumavage” pilgrimage still climbs up to it. Come at the end of the day: the light on the stone with the Alpilles behind is worth the detour.

The old hilltop village

Old Eygalières has to be earned: you climb on foot through stone lanes up to the castle ruins at the top of the spur. On the way: the clock tower (1676), the old Saint-Laurent church, Romanesque, 12th century and a listed historic monument, and the Penitents’ chapel. At the top, the Virgin watches over the plain, and the view over the Alpilles is one of the finest in the region.

The village today

Further down, around the Saint-Laurent church built in 1905, Eygalières lives at its own pace: terraces in the shade of plane trees, galleries, delicatessens and restaurants whose reputation reaches far beyond Provence. All around, the vineyards produce wines you will find on the best local tables.

The Friday morning market

On Friday mornings the market sets up in the village centre and gives Eygalières its most natural rhythm: local producers, flowers, goat’s cheese, Alpilles olive oil, seasonal fruit. The perfect time to stock up before a long lunch by the pool.

Walks and cycling around Eygalières

Eygalières is an ideal starting point to explore the Alpilles on foot or by bike: quiet roads through olive groves and vineyards towards Aureille, the climb to the Pas de la Figuière, paths to the Saint-Sixte chapel. In summer, access to the hills may be restricted because of the fire risk: check before you set off — we keep you informed during your stay.

When to visit Eygalières

In spring, when the fields turn red with poppies and the terraces reopen. In summer, for the pool, the long evenings and the Saint-Laurent village festival around the second weekend of August. In September and October, when the light softens, the grape harvest begins and the village finds its calm again.
